Netgear WNDR3800 Review / Story

Posted by FriedCPU

Recently our Netgear modem/router combo DGN2000 has gotten a little long in the tooth, and started to struggle with
the daily needs of our network, 1 Server/NAS, 2 Desktops, 5 Laptops, 4 Smartphones, 2 iPads and a Wireless Printer. So I found myself in the market for a new device, a powerful device.

I considered many options, originally looking at only modem/router combo products, but it became apparent that most of them wouldn't cope with what I wanted to throw at it, so I broadened my search to router only products, still sticking with Netgear as I have found them reliable over the last 10years or so, I found the WNDR3800, the recent successor to the WNDR3700v2. Due to the price ($177 shipped from I-Tech, slow on delivery, but cheapest I found) I decided to see if the DGN2000 could cope with only being a modem, so far so good.

Side Note: Also I couldn't find a modem with good reviews, cheap, that allowed you to adjust the SNR and save it across reboots, which I have managed with the DGN2000 running DGTeam Firmware.

I ordered up the WNDR3800 last Tuesday, Arrived on Monday (Said they were slow!) very simple to setup, put the DGN2000 on a different subnet, put it into modem mode, connected the router, set the WAN settings to PPoE with Internode's login details, and away it went!

Unfortunately I had to turn off the 5GHZ radio, as there are only 2 devices (Macs) in the house that can use it, and I didn't want to confuse everyone else, but all other devices are 'N' so all good!

The signal strength in fantastic, the iPad/Smartphones would drop signal at the other end of the house, now they have almost full signal, including outside :)

But there was one short coming of this router... the DHCP/DNS options were pretty much non-existant. This is marketed as a premium router, but won't let you set a network domain, keep track of hostnames/ips its assigned in DNS for local resolving, or set a TFTP option in the DHCP.

I toyed with the idea of modifying Netgears Open Source firmware, but couldn't get it to build quite right, without modifying it. But I did see on the OpenWRT forums that user arokh had recently added support for the WNDR3800 in his WNDR3700v2 'fully featured' firmware!

Thats another post though...

DHCP Server on Debian Squeeze

Posted by FriedCPU

After trying to setup a DHCP Server on my box in Debian Squeeze it became apparent that the way todo it has changed in the latest stable version of Debian.

Firstly, install the DHCP Server using apt-get

# apt-get install dhcp3-server

The way debian used to work, you would
# nano /etc/default/isc-dhcp-server

to set INTERFACES="". Now, this becomes
# nano /etc/default/dhcp3-server

And to start/stop and restart the daemon, the command is now
# /etc/init.d/isc-dhcp-server
Usage: /etc/init.d/isc-dhcp-server {start|stop|restart|force-reload|status}

Only a slight change, but it seems to be causing some confusion around the interwebs.

A journey starts with the first mile…

Posted by Girl_Alone

So far the first mile has caused my left foot and ankle to almost give in and now my right is following suit! Currently updating this blog with my feet in nice warm water and salts to help...fat lot of good it'll do for tomorrow!

I mention tomorrow because FriedCPU and I finally got a job, it's nothing huge just delivering papers of a Thursday and Friday for a pittance but it's something. We pick up our first batch in the morning tomorrow, collate them with the catalogues that are going out this week and we start delivering them in the afternoon. I reckon it'll take us both Thursday and Friday to deliver them, which isn't bad considering how out of shape we both are (me more so).

So, first step towards our weight loss and a little step into the working world.

As those that know us, my weight has been a constant battle for me, but this Friday afternoon I'm hoping to get a referral from my doctor to see a Dietician and see what we can do and change to help me. A change in medication is definitely in order considering most of the excess bulk I'm carrying at the moment is because of the tablets. I was loosing weight until I started them. Add the dietician, the new job walking the neighbourhood delivering papers and hopefully fixed up feet on Monday, my weight should fall off!

A small victory for FriedCPU and I could turn out to be just want we've been looking for :)

On the internet, nothing is ever deleted

In this case, its a good thing!
Going through my old emails in my gmail account, I have found receipts for train tickets, bus tickets, cinema tickets for when Girl_Alone was in England :D finally, some proof apart from photos (which won't be enough on their own) to show that she was there!

It's currently 2:40am, I can't sleep, thinking about various things, going over in my head what we need for this damn Visa,
working it out, I think we'll have 15 statuary declarations by the time we're done... how can they refuse a Visa with that many people saying we're genuine!!

On another note, I have been meaning to post a video that Girl_Alone recently completed for her EDU4IT class at University, working in a group of 3, using stop motion, I think it turned out really well :) ... plus I want to see if embedding videos works on this blog ;)

It starts…

Well, the ball is finally rolling... well, more a slow meandering, on my Visa, on Monday I sent the UK Police Check to my Mum in the UK, so she can get someone to sign my photo who has known me for two years and who is in one of the professions they stipulate.
She received it yesterday (Saturday) so hopefully I will have the Approved Police Check which states I am not a criminal in my grubby paw within the next few weeks :)

In other news... I hope Girl_Alone doesn't turn this blog into a blog about cats... time will tell :|

Urgh! I love our cats, don't get me wrong, but after the terrible night sleep I had I could kill our Milo. As per usual, FriedCPU slept through the whole thing, but I was up and down all night worried sick that we'd accidentally roll onto her a squish the poor kitten. Who ever heard of a kitten thinking it was smart to sleep between two people?? At least Shadow, our beloved kitten that was run over a few months ago, had the sense to sleep at the end of the bed!

After getting up, Milo has decided that sleeping with us wasn't enough, she's been sleeping on me all afternoon!! Hope tonight is Milo free, at least Whiskey is scared of people enough he wont even attempt to sleep with us!

I shall call him Squishy and he shall be mine and he shall be my Squishy.

Well, this has been a long time coming. FriedCPU has been talking about starting a blog for a couple of years now...and here it is! I'm quite surprised that he wanted it to be a joint blog, considering I thought that it was going to be about bikes and code. Now it's open for anything! *evil cackle*

For those of you who know us know FriedCPU and I have been together now for almost three and a half years, he recently moved to Australia to be with me after we realised that this was what we wanted way back in Feb 2010. As it stands now, FriedCPU is going to sell his bike and apply to a partner visa :) I'm so excited! It just means we're one step closer to tolerantly ever after :)

My Aunty came up from Geelong today to see my new three month niece, the cats are currently no where to be found, hiding out in the end room is my guess, going to investigate later. For those who haven't seen them yet, these are the lovingly distant kittens that currently reside at our house Milo and Whiskey.

Aren't we just cute?

Well, that's all for now :)
